Which are the Premier League football teams currently in form?
I imported the Premier League table from https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/tables into Excel via Power Query and used some M code to find the number of points earned by each team in their last 5 matches played (Last5Pts). I then calculated the league position for each team if it was decided by just their last 5 matches, and compared that position to each team’s actual position in the league.
i.e. Newcastle are currently in 17th position in the league, but their last 5 match form is the 19th best in the league, so they score a -2 (they are dropping away). Arsenal, currently in 10th place in the league, have the 3rd best 5 match form, so they score a 10-3=+7 (they are doing well).
Champions from last season Liverpool are going through a terrible run of form. Bottom of the table this year, Sheffield United are improving, but even their new form is relegation level. Arsenal had a bad first half of the season, but now they are greatly improved. Manchester City and Manchester United have maintained form matching their league positions while Everton have slipped away.
Fulham have hit a rich vein of form which could see them escape the relegation zone. West Brom have also improved, but probably have too many points to make up. Newcastle look to be in danger of the drop if they do not improve very soon.
